TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said the Trump administration’s blame game against China over the COVID-19 crisis is aimed at deflecting attention from Washington’s incompetency to save lives across the US amid the pandemic.

“Iran dismisses the recent American regime’s #COVID19-related blame game & smears against China. The regime’s campaigns aimed at diverting attention at home & abroad from the Admin’s incompetency to save lives & reopen economy. Iran calls on independent states to stand against the US bullying,” Seyed Abbas Mousavi tweeted on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump and other US officials have blamed China for the devastating scale of the coronavirus pandemic, slamming Beijing over its lack of transparency and warning that the US could “cut off” its relationship with the Asian country.

On May 3, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said “enormous evidence” showed the new coronavirus originated in a lab in China.

Trump, without giving details, has said there is evidence the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the source.

China denies the claims and even the US Director of National Intelligence office has said analysts are still examining the exact origin of the outbreak.

The United States has registered more than 88,500 deaths linked to COVID-19 — the highest toll of any nation.
