During a meeting in Tehran with Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Umberto de Pretto, Selahvarzi elaborated on Iran’s strategic position in regional transport and its access to the high seas.
“We are looking to hold an international transportation and transit conference with the countries of the region, especially the Persian Gulf countries, in cooperation with the Bandar Abbas Chamber of Commerce in 2024,” Selahvarzi said.

The official stated that the purpose of holding the international transport and transit conference is to introduce and promote the Carnet TIR as an international customs and transit document.
He further thanked the efforts of the International Road Transport Union to solve the problems of Iranian drivers to obtain visas, saying: “Iran Chamber of Commerce is ready to send a group to Belgium to negotiate with the European Union Commission in coordination with IRU to facilitate the conditions for obtaining visas for Iranian drivers.”

Selahvarazi also referred to the memorandum of understanding that is to be concluded between the ICCIMA, IRU and the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) and described this move as working in the direction of strengthening cooperation between Iran and IRU.

Umberto de Pretto for his part pointed to Iran’s readiness to train 700,000 drivers in the use of Carnet TIR services and emphasized: “Iran has been able to be a leader in issuing Carnet TIR and the very important issue of driver training, and I will announce this at the world level because this issue is of great importance for IRU.”

“The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the ICCIMA, IRU and Iran Customs is another important step that is being carried out and can be very effective in expanding the level of cooperation,” he stressed.
